A personally curated selection of Peru’s most extraordinary Boutique Hotels and Lodges

Peru is a land of breathtaking contrasts, where ancient Inca heritage meets stunning natural beauty and a vibrant culinary scene. Choosing the right places to stay can make all the difference, transforming your journey into something truly extraordinary. This guide features a selection of my personal favorites – places I've stayed and cherished.

Cloistered courtyards inside Palacio Nazarenas

Belmond Palacio Nazarenas, Cusco

Palatial Luxury

Once the capital of the Inca Empire, Cusco exudes timeless charm with its rich tapestry of history, culture, and tradition. In the heart of the old town, just steps from vibrant Plaza de Armas, lies Palacio Nazarenas— a former palace and nunnery masterfully transformed into Cusco's most opulent hotel. This Belmond property blends colonial elegance with impeccable service and luxurious amenities (think oxygen-enriched suites). Set around seven tranquil courtyards and monastery gardens—one featuring a serene outdoor pool—it offers a peaceful oasis within the city. The 55 spacious suites are adorned with Peruvian art, hand-painted frescoes, four-poster beds, marble bathrooms, and original Inca stonework. Dining at Mauka, helmed by renowned chef Pía León, was a highlight of my stay, as was a rejuvenating coca leaves treatment at the intimate Hypnôze Spa. My personal butler also arranged a Pisco tasting and a delightful herbal garden tea session, making this stay truly unforgettable.

Right next door is the opulent sister property, Hotel Monasterio, a historic gem adorned with exquisite artwork, captivating paintings, and stunning Baroque architecture. Cusco is also the starting point of two iconic Belmond trains: the Hiram Bingham, which offers a scenic journey to Machu Picchu, and the luxurious overnight Andean Explorer, traveling through breathtaking landscapes to Lake Titicaca and Arequipa.

Casita at Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo, surrounded by cloud forest gardens

An enchanting hideaway set within a lush cloud forest

Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel, Aguas Calientes

Cloud Forest Sanctuary

Machu Picchu, the Lost City of the Incas, is usually not missing on any Peru itinerary. You’ll either trek the iconic Inca Trail or take one of the scenic trains to Aguas Calientes, followed by a bus ride up to the citadel. While it can be done on a (long) day trip, I recommend staying overnight. This gives you the chance to visit the site before and after the bustling daytime hours—or even twice, exploring it from different perspectives. Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo, nestled at the foothills of Machu Picchu and surrounded by a lush cloud forest along the Vilcanota River, is an excellent base for exploring. Just steps from the train station yet tucked away from the crowds, it feels like a serene hideaway. The 85 Spanish Colonial-style casitas are spread across the property, exuding a rustic, cozy atmosphere. Many feature inviting log fireplaces, while some suites come with private outdoor areas and plunge pools. I thoroughly enjoyed the Unu spa, sweating in a traditional Andean eucalyptus sauna, followed by a refreshing dip in the spring-fed pond, surrounded by lush foliage. The property’s complimentary tours—whether watching hummingbirds and butterflies, exploring the world’s largest native orchid collection (370 species), or visiting its own tea plantation—are additional reasons for a stay.

Explora Valle Sagrado Lodge from outside

Striking architecture of the lodge

Explora Valle Sagrado, Sacred Valley

Luxury Exploration Basecamp

Rich history, breathtaking landscapes, fertile farmland, and towering Andean peaks define the Sacred Valley of the Incas—a place brimming with discovery. Yet many tourists rush through it, squeezing its major sites into a single whirlwind day while traveling between Cusco and Machu Picchu. Staying at Explora Valle Sagrado, tucked away in a tranquil corner of the valley, offers an opportunity for deeper exploration. The spacious Scandinavian-style rooms seamlessly blend natural wood and earthy tones, offering views of ancient Incan cornfields and the majestic Andes. Communal areas, designed with high ceilings, soft lighting, and warm, organic materials, create a serene atmosphere perfect for relaxation and reflection. The gastronomy at Explora, led by acclaimed Peruvian chef Virgilio Martínez, highlights fresh, locally sourced ingredients—I truly loved every single dish. Explora’s curated selection of over 40 excursions unlocks the essence of the Sacred Valley. Expert in-house-trained guides lead guests through iconic sites such as Chinchero, Pisac, and Moray, as well as vibrant local markets and traditional weaving communities. Adventure seekers can hike hidden trails, cycle along the river, or embark on high-altitude treks to secluded lagoons. After a day of exploration, the Pumacahua Bath House, set in a preserved 17th-century manor, offers saunas, an outdoor pool, and hot tubs in peaceful gardens—ideal for recharging before the adventures ahead.

Starlodge Pod Starlodge Pods in the cliff

Pods on the cliff, 400m above the valley

Starlodge Adventure Suites, Sacred Valley

Cliffside Stargazing

Sleeping in a pod suspended high above Peru's Sacred Valley might sound crazy—and it is—but it’s an adventure like no other. Starlodge combines thrill, nature, and stepping outside your comfort zone. Getting to the eight transparent pods requires navigating ladders and stairs along the cliff, an adventure that tests your nerve. Even with my bit of vertigo, the friendly guides ensured I made it up safely. The reward? Stunning valley views and a canopy of stars at night. Despite the unique setting, there are some comforts: each pod includes a private toilet, cozy bedding, and there are hot tubs and showers available midway up the climb. Stays also include dinner served in a cozy bubble tent further down the cliff, and breakfast the next morning. Nearby, the original Skylodge offers a simpler setup, with a steeper climb via ferrata and zip lines. These exhilarating activities can also be added to a stay at Starlodge, bringing some extra thrill to the adventure.

CIRQA Arequipa Pool courtyard Bóveda room at CIRQA Arequipa

16th-century charm with modern luxury

CIRQA, Arequipa

Monastic Luxury Reimagined

Arequipa is easily one of my favorite cities in South America. Known as the "White City," its luminous sillar architecture and the majestic El Misti volcano create a captivating charm. The historic center, with colonial churches, vibrant markets, and the enchanting Santa Catalina Monastery, is a treasure trove. Yet, for years, Arequipa lacked a truly exceptional place to stay. That changed with CIRQA, a Relais & Châteaux parador that blends 16th-century history with contemporary luxury. Originally a monastery from 1540, CIRQA’s sillar stone arches, exposed walls, and tranquil patios create an intimate oasis with just eleven rooms. Rooms range from intimate to opulent, with some featuring vaulted ceilings and indulgent soaking tubs. The Salón restaurant and open-air Terraza feature Arequipa-inspired cuisine and warm fire pits, while the city’s iconic sites, including Santa Catalina Monastery, lie within walking distance. After exploring, unwind with a dip in the plunge pool or a spa treatment. In the evenings, candles and crackling fire pits create a touch of magic.

A tented camp in the Colca Valley

PUQIO, Colca Valley

Safari-Style Canyon Glamping

Colca Canyon in southern Peru, one of the world’s deepest, is famed for its breathtaking landscapes and soaring Andean condors. PUQIO, a newly opened tented camp perched by the canyon’s edge, offers an intimate escape with only eight rooms. Choose from rustic Pirca adobe huts, crafted from local mud bricks to blend seamlessly with the terrain, or Carpa safari-style canvas tents, evoking classic exploration. The inviting main house is perfect for gathering over tea or a pisco cocktail, while savoring Andean dishes made with local ingredients and traditional clay ovens. Guided adventures, from trekking and mountain biking to horseback riding, reveal pre-Inca terraces, geysers, volcanoes, and condor lookouts. After exploring, relax with a massage in the spa tent or a soak in the hot tub.

Titilaka

Titilaka on a private peninsula

Titilaka, Lake Titicaca

Lakeside Andean Bliss

Lake Titicaca, the world's highest navigable lake, offers a stunning blend of breathtaking views and rich cultural heritage, straddling the borders of Peru and Bolivia. Nestled on a secluded peninsula just an hour from bustling Puno, Titilaka is a boutique haven of luxury and tranquility. The hotel features 18 elegantly designed loft-style rooms, each offering panoramic views of the deep blue lake and the majestic Andes. Expansive wraparound decks above the water’s edge provide the perfect spots for soaking in the peaceful surroundings, while the bright indoor spaces, adorned with regional crafts, exude charm and sophistication. Most activities are included in the rate, and the day trip to the Uros floating reeds and picturesque Taquile Island is an absolute must. Other options include guided Aymara village tours, biking, birdwatching, nature walks, or taking a kayak to explore the reeds on your own. Evenings often bring guests together around the fire, sharing drinks and stories—a great way to reflect on the day's adventures. Dining here is a true highlight, with contemporary Peruvian cuisine crafted from fresh, local ingredients like lake trout, alpaca, and garden-grown veggies. Generally, the hotel is committed to sustainable tourism, working closely with indigenous communities to preserve the ecosystem and local traditions.

Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica Cabana with canoppy bed

Rustic-chic cabañas surrounded by lush vegetation

Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica, Madre de Dios

Gateway to the Amazon

The Amazon Rainforest, teeming with life and beauty, is nature’s masterpiece, and Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica offers a front-row seat to its wonders. Perched on the banks of the Madre de Dios River and bordering the vibrant Tambopata National Park, this eco-luxury lodge is just a scenic 45-minute boat ride from Puerto Maldonado. The cabañas, raised on stilts and topped with palm-thatched roofs, are simple and rustic, showing a bit of their age yet retaining an authentic charm that perfectly complements their natural setting and blends seamlessly into the jungle surroundings. The lodge’s airy pavilion, with a cozy bar and dining area, showcases Amazonian flavors infused with global inspiration. Explore the rainforest with expert guides, whether hiking through lush trails, walking the treetop Canopy Walkway, or embarking on nighttime jungle adventures. Twilight river cruises and lake canoe rides reveal playful monkeys, giant otters, and caiman, while the jungle hums with vibrant birds and elusive reptiles. At Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica, the Amazon comes alive—offering a blend of adventure, discovery, and tranquility that stays with you long after you leave.

Atemporal Tudor mansion Atemporal Suite Bathtub

Atemporal inside this restored 1940s Tudor mansion

Atemporal, Lima

En Casa in Lima

Lima, Peru’s vibrant capital and bustling economic center, serves as the gateway for most travelers exploring this diverse country. While many hotels cater to business travelers, those seeking a more personalized experience will discover charming boutique options like Atemporal. Housed in a beautifully restored 1940s Tudor mansion, this intimate casa boasts just six elegantly designed rooms, from Cosy to Grand, offering the comforts of a luxury hotel within a warm, home-like setting. The communal spaces exude sophistication and relaxation, featuring a stylish salon, a cozy library lounge, and a serene terraced garden. Situated in a tranquil, secure neighborhood near the historic pre-Inca Huaca Pucllana pyramid, Atemporal offers convenient access to Lima’s most dynamic districts, Miraflores and Barranco. Guests can savor breakfast, afternoon treats, and an array of snacks and beverages from the pantry kitchen, while also exploring Lima’s renowned culinary scene, home to some of the world’s most celebrated restaurants. The attentive staff provides exceptional concierge services, ensuring a seamless experience of the city while making you feel truly en casa in Lima.

Hotel Paracas poolside

Hotel Parcas has two outdoor pools

Hotel Paracas, a Luxury Collection Resort, Paracas

Desert Meets Sea

Three hours south of Lima along the Pacific coast lies Paracas, a destination often visited as a day trip from the capital. However, I recommend staying at least two nights to fully appreciate the breathtaking landscapes, vibrant wildlife, and rich culture of the Ica region. Hotel Paracas, part of Marriott’s Luxury Collection, is set in lush gardens along Paracas Bay, with villa-style buildings housing elegant rooms and suites. The region's mild climate—often likened to eternal spring—makes the resort's two heated outdoor pools perfect for relaxing. Popular among families from Lima, the resort also features a kids' club and some complimentary water sports. Dining options include three on-site restaurants, with Chalana, a maritime waterfront eatery serving fresh seafood, being my favorite. Each morning, the hotel organizes boat tours to the Ballestas Islands, a wildlife sanctuary known as the "Galapagos of the Poor," home to sea lions, Humboldt penguins, and thousands of seabirds. Another day, I explored the dramatic Paracas National Reserve by bike, taking in its striking cliffs, secluded beaches, and sweeping dunes. Other activities include paragliding, visiting a Pisco vineyard to sample Peru's iconic spirit or venturing to the (touristy but fun) Huacachina oasis for dune buggy rides and sand-boarding. For an unforgettable highlight, I recommend a light aircraft flight from Pisco over the mystical Nazca Lines—enormous geoglyphs etched into the desert floor by the ancient Nazca civilization.

KiChic Máncora garden, pool and ocean view

KiChic awaits on the northern Shores of Peru

KiChic, Máncora

Barefoot Beach Sanctuary

Despite its expansive coastline, Peru isn’t usually recognized as a beach destination. Yet, in the north, the fishing village of Máncora shines as a sunny haven for surfers and those who love the sea. A bit outside of town, set along a beautiful palm-fringed beach, KiChic awaits as a chic, adults-only beach retreat. Nestled within lush gardens, this hideaway offers a handful of rooms and suites with rustic-elegant decor, all thoughtfully designed and decorated by the owner. Some suites even feature oceanfront decks and private plunge pools. Days here begin with peaceful beach walks or a yoga class, followed by leisurely lounging by the beach or a refreshing dip in the oceanfront lap pool, and the evenings await with spectacular sunsets. KiChic’s friendly team can arrange cooking classes, surfing lessons, and humpback whale watching tours from July to November. The menu highlights vegetarian dishes alongside fresh fish and seafood—I had some of Peru’s best ceviche here. Máncora may not be a standalone destination, but it’s the perfect place to rest and relax after sightseeing and trekking in the Andes.

More places to stay

Peru is vast, and naturally, there are many other exceptional places to stay. While I haven't had the chance to visit them all, here are some additional properties worth considering:

Cusco offers a wide variety of accommodations catering to diverse preferences and budgets. In addition to the two Belmond properties, noteworthy options include the Inkaterra La Casona, Palacio del Inka, and the charming Antigua Casona San Blas.

In the Sacred Valley, the Belmond Rio Sagrado and Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba stand out as luxurious choices. Other excellent options include Sol y Luna and Tambo del Inka. For something more boutique and intimate, consider the Andenia Boutique Hotel or Las Qolqas EcoResort, both offering a unique charm.

Lima features an extensive selection of luxury hotels, many operated by international chains that, while comfortable, may lack a distinctive character. For a more unique experience, consider the elegant Miraflores Park (Belmond) or the artistic Hotel B, located in the vibrant Barranco district. Another interesting option is Fausto, a boutique property with a creative flair.

In the Southern Amazon and Tambopata, Rainforest Expeditions operates three eco-lodges deep in the jungle. Additionally, a newly opened treehouse retreat, Alta Sanctuary, offers an adventurous and unique experience. In Iquitos, the focus shifts to Amazon river cruises, with standout options like Delfin Amazon Cruises and Aqua Expeditions, as well as two new providers set to launch operations soon.
